Magnificent Metal Monday – Magic of Metal Cladding

Metal made the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health located in Las Vegas one of the most remarkable metal construction projects in recent history, draped and wrapped with a “mountainous metal-clad skin, faced in shingled panels and punctured with a grid of windows,” states Architect Magazine. The amazing building was designed by none other than Frank Gehry, who has truly “reinvented the art of metal cladding.” Now 92, Gehry has work spanning decades, perhaps most known for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain.

Magnificent Metal Monday – Sky Pool Held up by Invisible Steel Frame

Suspended 115 feet in the air, the world’s first floating pool opened in London on May 15. Architecture Digest reports, “The 82-foot-long heated oasis, which stretches across two flat roofs of the five-star hotel-like Embassy Gardens’ prominent Legacy buildings, is perhaps the world’s largest single piece of load-bearing acrylic.” What’s holding up the central section – an invisible steel frame!

Magnificent Metal Monday – US Infrastructure Update

Photo Credit: Mario Tama via Getty Images

Construction Dive reported last week, “The U.S. is one step closer to a massive, much-needed infrastructure spending package.” The Senate voted last Wednesday to advance a bipartisan bill, which includes $550 billion in new federal funding for infrastructure. The bill will now enter a process of debates and amendments. Should the bill pass, it would inject funding into transportation, utilities and broadband spending. Senators voted to advance the package 67-32, with 17 Republicans joining all 48 Senate Democrats — and two Independents who caucus with the Democrats — in favor of advancing it.

With so many people returning to travel, airports are back in the news. As new technologies and advancements transform aviation, so too has airport architecture evolved to meet modern travel demands.”

Magnificent Metal Monday – Hurricane Resistant Steel Home

With the start of Hurricane season and the approaching Tropical Storm set to sweep across Florida this week, let’s look at the use of metal in building a hurricane resistant home. According to Architect Magazine, “When designers Holly Zickler and her husband, David Rifkind, a professor of architecture in Miami, FL, built their home in South Miami in 2011, the couple envisioned it as ‘a laboratory for socially and ecologically sustainable construction and planning in South Florida.’” They wanted a hurricane resistant house that was durable enough for the harsh Miami climate while staying different from the city’s traditional art deco style.

Steel Mills Currently in Driver’s Seat

This month, Argus reports, “A year after one of the sharpest production contractions in the US steel industry, domestic flat-rolled mills are reaping the benefits of historically high finished steel prices, tight supply and record scrap margins. US steel production and mill utilization have remained below year-prior levels for nearly all of last year because of Covid-19-related drops in demand, keeping spot and contract steel supply limited amid higher demand.”

Magnificent Metal Monday – Los Angeles Convention Center in Spotlight

After not being used for months on end and also serving as an overflow hospital for COVID-19 patients, the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) took center stage last night as the primary venue for the high profile Grammys event. Although there was no audience present, there was a red carpet, awards and live performances.

Compared to other convention destinations, Los Angeles has lagged behind, especially to its neighbor Anaheim. According to CityWatchLA, “To attract a greater share of the lucrative convention business, the Tourism and Convention Board has been modernizing the Convention Center and promoting hotel development with the goal of adding 4,000 new hotel rooms within walking distance of it by 2020.”

METALFOCUS® Safety Program Continues TODAY with Fall Protection Planning

METALFOCUS® CONTINUES TODAY 2/25 – REGISTER NOW! EARN 1 AIA HSW LU CREDIT.

METALFOCUS®, a series of 10 one-hour safety training virtual courses to address situations unique to metal construction job sites launched last week with the first course, continues today. Participant Christopher Teague with GarVin Construction Inc. shared the following testimonial after taking the first course last week:

“I believe there is a lot of misconception about the 15’ rule and CDZ’s. While all of us here have had lots of fall protection training over the years there seems to be very few instructors that understand the requirements for steel erectors. Plus we run in to a lot of GC’s that override those rules with stricter ones. So, I found this information to be useful and clear up a lot of old habits we have. So this was interesting to me to be reminded again in a meaningful way. Look forward to the upcoming zooms.”

METAL CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN OUTLOOK

Watch the webinar ON DEMAND and take the survey at end to earn one AIA LU!

In last week’s METALCONLive! webinar, “Trends in Metal Construction & Design for Q2 and 2021,” Frank Stasiowski, Co-Founder of METALCON in partnership with the Metal Construction Association along with industry experts Tony Bouquot, General Manager, Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) and Alex Carrick, Chief Economist, ConstructConnect, discussed current market conditions in an effort to help the metal design and building community with strategic decisions for Q2 and 2021. Frank’s “half-full” glass, was often countered by Alex’s “half-empty” with Tony coming somewhere in the middle. The consensus, however, was that it is too early to truly know how the rest of the year will unfold but explained which markers to keep an eye on.
