Solar Industry Sets Records in 2020 and on Track to Quadruple by 2030; METALCON to Feature Solar Solutions

RoofersCoffeeShop reports, “For the second year in a row, solar led all technologies in new electric-generating capacity added, accounting for 43%.” According to the U.S. Solar Market Insight 2020 Year-in-Review report, released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie, the U.S. solar industry grew 43% and installed a record 19.2 gigawatts (GWdc) of capacity in 2020.

SEIA, along with their members and allies across the energy system, have set an ambitious goal for solar energy to comprise 20% of all U.S. electricity generation by 2030. To reach this target, the industry must work collaboratively across technologies and industries to build a strong Solar+ economy.

Solar Solutions at METALCON

METALCON 2021 is thrilled to be returning to an “IN PERSON” event, scheduled for October 6-8 in Tampa, Florida. As the demand for solar panel installation grows from both the residential and commercial sectors, so has the industry’s appreciation of metal for long-term durability. Discover the latest metal applications for solar at METALCON this year in a dedicated area on the exhibit floor. If you represent a business that manufactures solar components, develops performance monitoring systems or provides smart energy, energy storage or solar consulting services, consider exhibiting at the show. Participating exhibitors will meet hundreds of architects, developers, roofing contractors and others in the METALCON community who are eager to learn about solar energy. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE.

Women in Construction Week Continued – METALCONLive! Tackles Importance of Diversity in the Workplace

“Recruiting into Metal Roofing” General Session held at METALCON 2019

“Success and diversity go hand in hand … and it looks like increased productivity, better morale, retention, and faster problem solving.”

Tiffany “Tiff” Hutcheson, sales and customer service manager with Brightsmith Coaters (sister company of ATAS), offered this key takeaway during a METALCONLive! webinar held last year titled, “Can you Afford NOT to have Diversity in Your Workforce?” The webinar was moderated by RoofersCoffeeShop owner and founder of National Women in Roofing, Heidi Ellsworth, along with an expert panel of female industry leaders including Tiff, Sonya Malvick, international president of the Association of Women in Metal (AWMI) and outside territory sales manager with Olympic Steel, and Minnie Robles, product representative with ATAS International. While the participants emphasized how important it was to have broad-scoped diversity in your business plans, they expounded on the opportunities for women in the construction industry. In celebration of Women in Construction (WIC) Week, we look back at some of the key takeaways from that important webinar. If you missed it, take advantage of watching it anytime ON DEMAND. WHY AN IMP ROOF?

When IMPs first emerged as a building product in the 1960s they were predominantly used as an exterior wall assembly. Throughout the last 60 years, the materials and production methods have advanced considerably. According to the Metal Construction Association, “Insulated Metal Panel Roofs are premier building products on the leading edge of innovation.” The far reaching benefits include: high performance, sustainable building envelope, design flexibility, single component, and speed of build. The question isn’t “why an IMP roof” … the question is “why not.”

Join METALCONLive! and MCA TOMORROW as they present, The Advantages of an IMP Roof , by Greg Lusty, Vice President of Sales at All Weather Insulated Panels. Greg will provide a review of insulated metal roof panel systems in terms of their performance characteristics, profiles, and testing/approval requirements; along with the design and installation considerations that will help you be successful. This webinar qualifies for one AIA LU and its FREE!

Magnificent Metal Monday – Safety Redesign for Women in Construction Industry

Image courtesy of Skanska USA and Building Design + Construction.

Pre-COVID-19, the number of women in the construction industry finally began to move in the upward direction sitting at around 9.9%. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, between 2017 and 2018 alone the number of women working in construction trades increased by 17.6%. The percentage of women classified as construction managers also rose from 5.9% in 2003 to 7.7% in 2018. So how does the industry continue to diversify and retain women in the industry? As reported by Building Design + Construction last year, Skanska USA is working toward meeting certain needs by women in the workplace, such as PPE equipment (personal protective equipment).

Diversity in the Workplace – Be Part of the Conversation brought to you by Roofers Coffee Shop

REGISTER TODAY FOR YOUR FREE VIRTUAL SEAT – WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4 AT 1:00 PM EST

Study after study has concluded that there is a clear link between workplace diversity, increased productivity, and the bottom line. In fact, according to a study by Forbes, companies with a diverse workforce produce 19% more in earnings than their less diverse counterparts. You need talented workers now more than ever. So why, at a time when the skilled labor shortage is hitting the construction particularly hard, do woman make up just 9% of the US construction industry workforce? You simply can’t afford NOT to diversify your workforce!

Join us next Wednesday, November 4 when Heidi Ellsworth, partner of RoofersCoffeeShop®, founder of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) and of Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3) and past METALCON speaker, will moderate this important subject that profoundly impacts our industry; the challenges, benefits, rewards, and strategies associated with recruiting and retaining top talent in today’s market.

In celebration of National Roofing Week, we are proud to bring you an amazing story about a collaborative effort being done in Pennsylvania to promote diversity in work force development. ATAS International, one of METALCON’s long-standing exhibitors, was once again involved in their local “Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls” last month. This year, the “advanced camp” group designed and constructed a shed from the ground up, as part of a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser, including the installation of an ATAS metal roof. Now in its fourth year, this annual event serves as a way for the design and construction community in the Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania area to promote work force development for the industry as a whole.
