Zinc?  Why yes, zinc!  By having the awesome responsibility of blogging for the METALCON community, perusing the metal building and construction trades is a daily activity.  Stories about zinc roofing projects seem to be appearing with regularity so it raised a bit of curiosity.  Zinc has been around since the dark ages … well, maybe not that long, but zinc has a rich global history and is known for its long lifespan. Big Win for Solar Energy

pexels-photo-421888.jpegBreaking News!  This week California became the first state to mandate solar panels on new home construction.  As reported by the Wall Street Journal, “The California Energy Commission voted unanimously to approve a mandate that residential buildings up to three stories high, including single-family homes and condos, be built with solar installations starting in 2020.”  Final approval will be made by the Building Standards Commission later this year.   Continue reading

adelanto1Innovation happens when two metal manufacturing companies team up!  When McElroy Metal wanted to add solar panels to its California manufacturing plant, they called on fellow METALCON exhibitor, S-5! to assist.  Although their California plant didn’t necessarily need a new roof, after seeing the success they had from installing solar panels to their facility in Peachtree City, GA, McElroy decided it was worth the investment.  After almost five years, the energy generated at the McElroy Peachtree City facility surpassed the plant’s energy consumption, saving the company thousands of dollars.  McElroy expects to offset their California plant’s electrical usage and show a return on investment in approximately three years. We continue to explore how 3D printing has the potential to “remodel the construction industry.”  As featured in Monday’s blog post, Amsterdam is poised to install the first 3D printed bridge made entirely from steel in 2019.  Structures built with 3D printing are popping up in locations such as Dubai, China, Italy, Russia and El Salvador.  It is also a subject that is appearing with more regularity in construction and technology trades and in mainstream news sources.  As reported by the Wall Street Journal just this month, “3-D printing is scaling up. All over the world, an impressive diversity of people and organizations, ranging from startups and hobbyists to construction and engineering firms, are successfully prototyping 3-D-printed buildings.” Continue reading

Magnificent Metal Monday

Logo-01

Today is magnificent because we are six months from METALCON 2018 which is scheduled for October 10-12 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  If you have been to METALCON before and think you know the show, think again!  We are thrilled to announce that major changes are taking place to greatly enhance your experience and return on investment.  METALCON is moving toward a “total experience” concept and making everything accessible to you ON THE FLOOR!  What does that mean exactly?  Just as it says, from the trade show booths to the education seminars to the keynote address – everything will take place ON the floor! Along with the changes to the overall layout of the show, new pricing will also be announced soon.  Look for a “total experience” price inclusive of the trade show AND the education, moving away from separate fees for the conference and trade show.  Attendees will now be able to enjoy a “one stop shop.”  Check out our March issue of METALCONnection for the latest show news.

METALCON 2018 will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina October 10-12.  This will be METALCON’s first appearance in the city nicknamed the “Queen City” in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who had become the Queen of England several years before the city’s inception. While Charlotte is not considered one of the United States’ “major” metropolitan cities … take note, THIS is a city on the rise.  By attending METALCON this year, you will have the chance to explore why this is a city worth seeing.

Magnificent Metal Mondays

Magnificent Metal Monday takes us to METALCON’s 2018 location, Charlotte, NC.  Located just on the outskirts of the city sits a phenomenal 14-ton sculpture made from massive stainless steel layers that rotate 360 degrees and occasionally align to create a massive head.  Metalmorphosis was conceived by Count Riprand Arco, Founder and Chairman of American Asset Corporation. Count Arco commissioned internationally renowned Czech sculptor, David Cerny, to conceive, craft and execute a one-of-a-kind sculpture. Cerny says, “I was thinking about doing something as a centerpiece. I knew I wanted to employ water from the beginning.” In addition to the water element, Cerny’s design also incorporates a complex infrastructure and choreographed movement on a magnificent scale, creating a beautiful synergy of form and function. A true testament to his technical savvy and his talent as an artist.  Metalmorphosis can be seen at Whitehall Corporate Center, a 200-acre office park located about 15 miles from downtown Charlotte.  And check it out – Metalmorphosis has its very own webcam!

Olympic Blades of Steel

Skeleton - Winter Olympics Day 7

“Blades of Glory” or “Blades of Steel?” The Winter Olympics began in 1924 and have been held in 11 different countries over the past nine decades.  The Winter Olympics are officially underway in Pyeongchang, South Korea and steel is taking center stage.  Athletes from all over the world competing in various different sports all rely on steel to enhance their performance and keep them safe as they compete for the highest honors in their sport. From ice skating to speed and short skating, bobsledding, skeleton, luge, ice hockey, skiing and snowboarding, high performance steel is the common denominator.  As the world comes together to watch the power of victory and the agony of defeat, METALCON wishes TEAM USA and athletes from around the world a safe and exhilarating two weeks of competition.

Bradbury Receives Leveler and Laser Flat Trak® CL Testimonial

Centria Logo.png

Dickie Jones, Plant Operations Manager at Centria in Frankfort, KY, USA, had this to say about their Bradbury e-Drive® leveler with the Flat Trak® CL monitoring system:

“Our Auto Selective Hydraulic leveler from Bradbury is an awesome machine! By running in automatic mode and letting the leveler adjust itself, we achieve an in-house material flatness within ½ an I-Unit or less instead of the usual five to ten I-Units from outside sources. The steel and aluminum sheets from this machine are so flat you can’t physically find material issues. We now have zero problems feeding a production machine that requires sheet flatness to be within .004.”

The Flat Trak® CL Series measures, displays and makes automated adjustments to the leveler!

This system is accurate, intuitive and easy to operate.  All monitoring is performed before the material is sheared resulting in lower scrap output. Learn more about the Flat Track® CL monitoring system.
