Get to know the Metal Construction Association

For nearly 40 years, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) has focused on one key strategy – to promote the use of metal in the building envelope through marketing, education, and action on public policies that affect metal’s use. It is a volunteer-led organization with much of the work achieved through strong leadership by its board of directors and member-driven MCA councils and committees. In addition to the annual METALCON event, full membership meetings are held twice each year with the next one coming up next month in the beauty and warmth of the Sonoran Desert in Scottsdale, Arizona.

MBCEA Announces New President

METALCON would like to congratulate Jennifer Heimburger of Heimburger Construction Inc. as the next president of the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA). The MBCEA National Board ratified the election of officers and new board members during its annual meeting held October 7, 2021, in Tampa, FL during the METALCON trade show. Jennifer is currently serving as vice president of MBCEA.

Despite the challenges to produce an event in the current climate, METALCON Show Director Judy Geller says, “It was a fantastic show with a lot of energy, and people were happy to be back.” This year’s show included more than 200 leading companies exhibiting the latest metal construction industry products and technology with over 2500 attendees. From veteran exhibitors to first-timers, the overall consensus was how important it was to be able to see pDeople face-to-face and to shake hands again.

Magnificent Metal Monday – Museum of Tomorrow

As announced last month in METALCON’s inaugural Metal in Architecture design and construction project photo competition, the Gotca Group received the award in the “interior” category for their work done on the Museum of Tomorrow.

Opened in 2015 as a new icon of the modernization of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro’s harbor, the Museum of Tomorrow was born in the Praça Mauá as a science museum meant to explore, imagine, and conceive all the possibilities for constructing the future. The Museum of Tomorrow, or Museu do Amanhã to locals, serves as an innovative cultural space addressing the future of the planet was designed by renowned Spanish architect, engineer and artist Santiago Calatrava.

NEW Metal Architecture Academy Launched by MCA

On the heels of METALCON 2021 where architects were in the spotlight with the new Architect’s Experience, the Metal Construction Association has announced the launch of their new Metal Architecture Academy, emphasizing the importance of educating the design community on the uses and benefits of metal. As reported by DesignandBuildwithMetal, “The Academy includes eight courses which provide opportunities to learn about metal walls and roofing as sustainable and flexible solutions for today’s architectural challenges, as well as design options that are unique and inspiring.”

Magnificent Metal Monday – ATAS’ Winning Project

Earlier this month, winners of the inaugural Metal in Architecture design and construction project photo competition were announced at METALCON 2021 in Tampa, Florida. Long time exhibitor and METALCON sponsor, ATAS International, Inc., took home the grand prize for the work they did on the recently completed David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago. Along with the special recognition at the show, they were awarded $1,000, which they generously donated back to METALCON’s “give back” charity, Feeding Tampa Bay. Completed in 2020, the Forum is a 90,000 square foot facility designed by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) and built with a vision for intellectual, institutional and academic exchange.

METALCON 2021 – Day 2

Yesterday, it was non-stop action at the second day of METALCON with attendees networking with exhibitors, taking advantage of education sessions, playing trivia games at the Solar Education Center, enjoying free beer at Oktoberfest, and more!

METALCON 2021 brought a lot of firsts to the show experience including immersive pavilions in the specialty interest areas of IMPs, Solar, and CONTECH, a Top Products Awards with the selection of the People’s Choice Top 3 on site at the show, The Architect’s Experience, Trivia Games, and the Metal in Architecture Gallery and Design Contest.

METALCON is dedicated to making 2021 the safest event you attend all year.

We are only 14 days away from bringing the metal construction industry back together for the first time in two years and want you to know the health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, speakers, sponsors, partners and staff is our top priority. 

We are continuously monitoring the COVID-19 situation and working with the city of Tampa and the Tampa Convention Center to follow best practices and recommendations from public health officials, as well as national, state, regional, and local authorities including the CDC. As such, and in following CDC guidelines, METALCON strongly recommends all individuals, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, regularly clean hands, and mask regardless of vaccination status when you are in large gatherings.

MRA Calls for Increased Government, Utility Action to Spur Home Efficiency Improvements and Reduce Climate Impacts, Financial Burden on Families

The start of fall season is typically the time to prepare for colder weather, but with a changing climate, many regions are now experiencing hotter weather patterns that stretch far longer into the year, making home air conditioning systems not just a nice to have, but a need to have for families everywhere. That increasing demand is why the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) is calling on federal, state and local governments and utilities to take more action to help incentivize homeowners to make smart, energy efficient decisions when it comes to home building and remodeling practices.

Magnificent Metal Monday – Power of Solar

Last week the New York Times reported, “The Biden administration released a blueprint showing how the nation could move toward producing almost half of its electricity from the sun by 2050 — a potentially big step toward fighting climate change but one that would require vast upgrades to the electric grid.” The Energy Department laid out an ambitious blueprint for solar power to go from 4% to 45%.
