What’s a Home Without Its Roof? A Look at What’s Happening in the Roofing World

With National Roofing Week approaching in about a month, let’s look at what’s happening in the roofing world (with a slight bias toward metal roofs of course!).

Earlier this month, the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), hosted 224 participants – 88 attending for the first time – at Roofing Day 2022 on April 5-6 in Washington, D.C. Roofing professionals from throughout the U.S. met with 173 members of Congress and their staffs to advocate for solutions to workforce and supply chain challenges through immigration reform, Perkins career and technical education grants, and reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. NRCA reported 62% of these meetings were in-person, and attendees were able to meet with Congress members from 34 different states, with top top state represented being Ohio, followed by Texas, California, Florida and Maryland.

New Infrastructure Bill Includes Buy America Guidance for Iron and Steel

Steel manufacturing trade groups lauded the news that the new Infrastructure Bill includes a provision stating all iron and steel used in projects outlined in the bill must be produced in the United States. Metal Center News reported this week, “The guidance further requires all manufactured products in the project must be produced domestically. The product itself must be manufactured here, and the components of the product must represent 55 percent or more of the total cost of the product. All construction materials must also be manufactured in the U.S.”

According to a White House memo, projects funded by the $1.2 trillion infrastructure package must only use iron and steel produced in the U.S starting May 14. The requirement includes all manufacturing processes for the metals, from initial melting stage thru application of coatings. The announcement also includes a process to waive those requirements if domestic materials are not reasonably available or would raise the cost of the project by more than 25%. METALCON LIVE! MCA AND THE MCM ALLIANCE PRESENTS: CLADDING SAFETY IN LIGHT OF GLOBAL FIRES – TOMORROW, 4/20 AT 1:00 PM

ELIGIBLE FOR 1 AIA LU HSW– REGISTER NOW

Join us tomorrow as this panel of experts takes a “deep dive” into why Engineering Evaluations (EE) could be an acceptable alternative to running an NFPA 285 wall assembly test. This course will show how this evaluation process can be used as a viable path to evaluate wall assemblies to the requirements of the International Building Code. The baseline information required and the “layer-by-layer” analysis used will be reviewed by a qualified fire professional to demonstrate that a specific wall assembly meets the intent of the code. This approach should make the expected performance of the wall assembly clear to the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) so that an informed decision can be made on the acceptance of the proposed wall assembly.

Magnificent Metal Monday – Louisville Library

ArchDaily reports, “The exterior was inspired by the act of discovery, with symbolic metal curtains that are peeled away to reveal greater knowledge within. Over 120,000 books and media offerings are available in this building that aspires to be a vessel for daylight. The building’s massing and clerestory glazing deliberately subdivide, stretch, and carve the envelope to provide an optimal amount of daylight throughout the facility.”

Matthew Kruntorád, AIA, LEED AP, principal at MSR Design, and architect for the project, says metal made this library possible and contributed to giving it an adaptable, column-free and daylight-filled interior. “It allows the delicate proportions of the exterior columns and thin plaza canopies.”

Magnificent Metal Monday – Metal for Wind Mitigation

McElroy Metal Provides Hurricane-Safe Solution For Municipal Complex’s Roof

One of the myths “demystified” in last week’s METALCON Live! “Metal Building Systems 101” was that metal was not an ideal choice for buildings subjected to harsh climate conditions. In addition to our industry experts explaining why this was not true, an example was highlighted in the recent issue of DesignandBuildwithMetal. The newly completed Municipal Complex located in the Town of Surf City, North Carolina, selected metal roofing because it was able to meet the high-wind requirements of the coast. The article explained “durability as the main consideration for selecting McElroy Metal’s Maxima standing seam metal roofing.”
