SOLAR IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST TOPICS CURRENTLY IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY – LEARN THE TECHNIQUES AND AFFORDABILITY OF RAIL-LESS As solar mounting technologies evolve to improve installation efficiencies and reduce material and labor costs, some developers and installers on the job site often find it daunting to keep abreast of changing technologies and adapt their operating procedures accordingly. This seems evident by phobias some people have about rail-less PV mounting for metal roofs, while many others claim it is a piece of cake and saves a fortune. A few small shifts in thinking can produce huge savings in labor, material, and logistics, so it is worth a look. The shifts pertain to the mechanics of installation and a couple of other aspects of a project, such as wire management. This course will unpack metal roof installations with a brief overview of the various types of metal roofs and their advantages for PV. Wire management techniques will be presented along with other best practices and “how-to’s” for installing rail-less solar systems on metal roofs. Methods for installing various accessories from microinverters to home runs will also be covered.
Learn from experts in the field – Shelly Higgins AIA, CSI, IIBEC, NWiR Architectural and National Accounts Director @S-5! and Mark Gies Director of Solar Business @S-5!
Learning Objectives: • Learn why a metal roof is a perfect solar platform. • Define the advantages of rail-less solar PV mounting systems. • Understand how solar on metal roofs prove to be the most economical and the most eco-friendly. • Learn best practices for design and deployment of wire management. • Describe best practices for installation techniques and other balance of system (BOS) components.
RoofersCoffeeShop reports, “For the second year in a row, solar led all technologies in new electric-generating capacity added, accounting for 43%.” According to the U.S. Solar Market Insight 2020 Year-in-Review report, released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie, the U.S. solar industry grew 43% and installed a record 19.2 gigawatts (GWdc) of capacity in 2020.
SEIA, along with their members and allies across the energy system, have set an ambitious goal for solar energy to comprise 20% of all U.S. electricity generation by 2030. To reach this target, the industry must work collaboratively across technologies and industries to build a strong Solar+ economy.

When IMPs first emerged as a building product in the 1960s they were predominantly used as an exterior wall assembly. Throughout the last 60 years, the materials and production methods have advanced considerably. According to the Metal Construction Association, “Insulated Metal Panel Roofs are premier building products on the leading edge of innovation.” The far reaching benefits include: high performance, sustainable building envelope, design flexibility, single component, and speed of build. The question isn’t “why an IMP roof” … the question is “why not.”
Join METALCONLive! and MCA TOMORROW as they present, The Advantages of an IMP Roof, by Greg Lusty, Vice President of Sales at All Weather Insulated Panels. Greg will provide a review of insulated metal roof panel systems in terms of their performance characteristics, profiles, and testing/approval requirements; along with the design and installation considerations that will help you be successful. This webinar qualifies for one AIA LU and its FREE!

The discussion will be moderated by Mark Gies, Director of Solar Business at S-5! along with panelists Doug Claxton – Principal & Founder of The Solar Revolution & TSR Energy, Jesse Wiederin – Founder/Owner of The Solar Guys, and Shawn Haddock – S-5!’s Director of IT & Product Support, Senior Field Applications Specialist.
Study after study has concluded that there is a clear link between workplace diversity, increased productivity, and the bottom line. In fact, according to a study by Forbes, companies with a diverse workforce produce 19% more in earnings than their less diverse counterparts. You need talented workers now more than ever. So why, at a time when the skilled labor shortage is hitting the construction particularly hard, do woman make up just 9% of the US construction industry workforce? You simply can’t afford NOT to diversify your workforce!
Join us next Wednesday, November 4 when Heidi Ellsworth, partner of RoofersCoffeeShop®, founder of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) and of Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3) and past METALCON speaker, will moderate this important subject that profoundly impacts our industry; the challenges, benefits, rewards, and strategies associated with recruiting and retaining top talent in today’s market.
Last week on METALCONLive!, the Metal Construction Association presented leading authority on metal roofing recover systems, Charlie Smith with McElroy Metal, who gave a detailed presentation on the benefits of using metal to recover an existing sloped roof. You can stream the presentation on-demand by clicking on the above image. Some key takeaways from the presentation include the growing advantages of using metal for roof recover work, the future of using a “T” shape panel and if doing a retrofit, and knowing your clip offset before starting a project.
Charlie opened the presentation with the simple, yet important, question, “Why metal?” He answered his own question by saying, “Simple, it has the longest life expectancy of approximately 40-60 years.”
Knowing when to replace, retrofit or re-coat a roof has been an important and popular topic for years now regularly appearing in articles across industry trades. Removing and replacing old roofs was the go-to roofing solution for decades because it offered building owners the longest lifespan at the most economical price. Today, however, re-roofing solutions such as “Metal-over-Metal” and “Metal-over-Shingle” recover solutions offer owners alternate solutions with many advantages. To learn more about these solutions, join leading metal roofing authority, Charlie Smith with McElroy Metal, as he presents “12 Ways to Recover an Existing Sloped Roof with Metal” during this week’s METALCONLive! presented by the Metal Construction Association (MCA).
Each year, National Roofing Week increases awareness about the significance of roofs to every home and business and shares the good deeds of the industry.
NRCA encourages members to participate in National Roofing Week by engaging in their communities and informing the public about the essential role roofs and professional roofing contractors play in every community. Continue reading to see how you can participate this week.

For the first time in METALCON’s 29 year show history, the largest show in North America dedicated to metal in design and construction is meeting in the “Steel City!” While exhibitors and show management were putting the finishing touches on the show logistics and booths, attendees were registering and taking advantage of special programs such as the popular Metal Roof Installing Training Course.
The excitement built as the registration area got packed with attendees eager for the show to open. Rocky Bleier, former NFL and Pittsburgh Steeler legend as well as Vietnam veteran, took the stage at the PPG Theatre at 11:00 AM to officially open the show. After a moving introduction by a representative from sponsor United States Steel, Bleier was warmly greeted by the crowd. As he wove personal stories into his presentation, he spoke on the many ways you can lead with perseverance, teamwork and hope.
Once the exhibit hall opened, it was non-stop action with attendees networking with exhibitors, learning from industry experts at General Sessions and at the Learning Centers, visiting METALCON’s new CONTECH hub to learn the latest in how technology will move the industry forward, playing the Innovation Scanner Hunt, “giving back” to the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania, and enjoying Oktoberfest beverages. At the end of the day, we raffled off four prizes, including a signed NFL Jersey by Rocky Bleier, a signed NHL Pittsburgh Penguin Jersey, two signed NFL footballs by Rocky Bleier along with two signed copies of Bleier’s book. We also had our first $500 cash prize winner for the Innovation Scanner Hunt which was presented by sponsor DesignandBuildwithMetal.com.

METALCON 2019 is a “one-stop shop” for key training, education and one-on-one time with industry experts and exhibitors. It is a critical addition to any “punch list” for a roofing job. Recently featured in Metal Construction News, having a punch list is necessary in any metal roofing job whether it is a roof retrofit or new construction. The information that can be obtained at METALCON this year will give you the tools to complete a job accurately.
Increase Credibility with Clients with a Roofing Certification
Our friends with MBCI shared in a blog post, “Just because you’ve been installing roofing for 30 years, doesn’t mean installer training and certification isn’t necessary. From a bottom line perspective, it’s important for companies to be proactive in making sure there is always someone on their team who is a certified installer for the products they use—or might use.”
With the knowledge that comes with certification, you’ll be able to assist contractors and consumers alike in choosing the right metal roof for their needs. Being a certified provider, homeowners, design professionals and contractors will be able to clearly differentiate quality levels of steep slope metal roofing by applying industry performance standards.
According to the latest figures from the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), metal roofing is growing in popularity, especially in states that experience severe climate conditions. The report identifies the top five states for interest in metal roofing are Florida, Pennsylvania, California, New York and North Carolina, with Texas close behind.
DesignandBuildwithMetal.com has issued their inaugural Metal Roofing Edition. This issue features some of the most outstanding metal roofing projects showcased on their website over the past 12 months, along with a number of supporting articles dealing with related technologies and ancillary products. The cover features a fire station in Florida that doubles as a hurricane command center. The building showcases metal roofing from Petersen, illustrating both the aesthetic qualities and performance attributes that have made metal the first choice for such projects.
As winter weather officially sets in and reports of snow and ice storms appear in the news on a more regular basis, thanks to our friends at MCA, you will be well prepared. MCA has released a technical bulletin concerning snow retention and the proper design and use of snow retention devices when a metal roof is involved called Qualifying Snow Retention Systems for Metal Roofing.
