Magnificent Metal Monday – Hurricane Resistant Steel Home

With the start of Hurricane season and the approaching Tropical Storm set to sweep across Florida this week, let’s look at the use of metal in building a hurricane resistant home. According to Architect Magazine, “When designers Holly Zickler and her husband, David Rifkind, a professor of architecture in Miami, FL, built their home in South Miami in 2011, the couple envisioned it as ‘a laboratory for socially and ecologically sustainable construction and planning in South Florida.’” They wanted a hurricane resistant house that was durable enough for the harsh Miami climate while staying different from the city’s traditional art deco style.

Just over the bridge and a a few minutes away from the Tampa Convention Center, the site of METALCON 2021, lies the newly renovated St. Petersburg Pier, a case study featured by the Metal Construction Association. This $80 million project was designed by the architectural team of ROGERS PARTNERS and ASD|SKY and constructed by design and engineer specialists, MG MCGRATH. Specializing in the fabrication of metal plates, composite materials, and other wall panel systems, McGrath opted for CENTRIA® ROOF PANELS for the project. Tara Williams, project architect with ASD|SKY explains, “We were looking for a high-performance panel system, specifically aluminum, since we were building within a saltwater environment. Additionally, the panel needed to be lightweight, as the design included large expansive cantilevers.”

METALCON Live! TODAY @ 1PM EST – Rail-less Solar on Metal Roofs

Earn your CE certificate. NABCEP approved course – CEU 1.5 JTA & RE Elective
AIA – 1 LU|HSW Course #: MRIL2142
SOLAR IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST TOPICS CURRENTLY IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY – LEARN THE TECHNIQUES AND AFFORDABILITY OF RAIL-LESS
As solar mounting technologies evolve to improve installation efficiencies and reduce material and labor costs, some developers and installers on the job site often find it daunting to keep abreast of changing technologies and adapt their operating procedures accordingly. This seems evident by phobias some people have about rail-less PV mounting for metal roofs, while many others claim it is a piece of cake and saves a fortune. A few small shifts in thinking can produce huge savings in labor, material, and logistics, so it is worth a look. The shifts pertain to the mechanics of installation and a couple of other aspects of a project, such as wire management. This course will unpack metal roof installations with a brief overview of the various types of metal roofs and their advantages for PV. Wire management techniques will be presented along with other best practices and “how-to’s” for installing rail-less solar systems on metal roofs. Methods for installing various accessories from microinverters to home runs will also be covered.

Learn from experts in the field – Shelly Higgins AIA, CSI, IIBEC, NWiR
Architectural and National Accounts Director @S-5! and Mark Gies
Director of Solar Business @S-5!

Learning Objectives:
• Learn why a metal roof is a perfect solar platform.
• Define the advantages of rail-less solar PV mounting systems.
• Understand how solar on metal roofs prove to be the most economical and the most eco-friendly.
• Learn best practices for design and deployment of wire management.
• Describe best practices for installation techniques and other balance of system (BOS) components.
Register for FREE access to ‘Rail-less Solar on Metal Roofs’ happening LIVE today at 1:00 PM EST.

Celebrating Earth Day by Understanding Metal’s Role in Sustainability

Our special webinar series METAL ARCHITECTURE at METALCON, aimed at showcasing projects that illustrate the beauty, durability, efficiency, and sustainability of metal, continued earlier this month with a panel of three industry leaders who discussed how metal building products support the increasing demand for sustainable building practices. Moderated by Paul Deffenbaugh, editorial director of Metal Architecture, two architects from two ends of the country discussed their selection process for metal building components on recently executed projects.

Rick Schneider, FAIA, principal of ISTUDIO Architects, Washington, D.C., talked about the newly completed Marvin Gaye Recreation Center in Washington, and Hafsa Burt, studio head, hb+a Architects, San Francisco, presented her modular residential construction called the “Box Factory” as a sustainable model home that could fit in any environment. Both projects selected a variety of steel and metal materials for their long-term sustainable benefits. Bob Zabcik, P.E., technical director of the Metal Construction Association, joined the conversation by providing technical insight along with his extensive knowledge of metal components and sustainable building practices.

Magnificent Metal Monday – Metal’s Role in Sustainability

There are several key reasons why a metal roof is the right choice. According to the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), among these reasons include energy savings, aesthetic appeal, performance in weather-related events, longevity and environmentally sustainability. In this era of increased focus on sustainability, copper is “king.” According to Copper.org (Copper Development Association, Inc.), it’s durable, reliable and often outlives its aluminum, plastic and other metal counterparts. Copper adorns one of the world’s most stunning homes in the United States — The Hope Residence, located in Palm Springs, California.

According to Metal Roofing Alliance, “For a home that is nearly as famous and unique as the American entertainer who inspired it, the Hope Residence has been compared to a spaceship, a mushroom and a volcano. Whatever shape you imagine it resembles, there is no doubt there is nothing like this nearly 24,000 square foot home set at the highest point overlooking the star-studded city. The most striking element of the curvaceous, expansive home is the roof itself. Made from copper that slopes upward from three points to meet at an enormous open oculus, the roof seems to rise from the mountains, its dark aged patina softly glowing in ever-shifting desert light.”
