Magnificent Metal Monday – Innovative New Door Frames by Schweiss

Schweiss Doors Erects New Manufacturing Building As Showcase For New Door Frames

A leader in hydraulic doors and header frames for over 40 years, Schweiss continues to innovate. Recently featured in DesignandBuildwithMetal, their latest is erecting a new manufacturing facility to serve as a showcase for the company’s new “free-standing” header frames. The 90 by 94-foot metal building will have an inside clearance of 20 feet and will feature three hydraulic doors that illustrate the company’s free-standing header frames integrated into the hydraulic doors, allowing the doors to support themselves with no reliance on the building structure itself. Owner Mike Schweiss says, “The building and free-standing hydraulic door design will be a real exhibit that displays the new stand-alone hydraulic door. There’s nothing on the market like it.”

MBMA Announces 2022 Student Design Competition Award Winners

The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) has announced the winners of its second annual Student Design Competition, granting $28,500 in awards to six winners and to their faculty sponsors in an online ceremony. Two of the top winners hail from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst! The competition took place during the 2022 fall semester, with entries due January 6, 2023. This year’s contest for undergraduate and graduate architecture students challenged each participant to create an innovative metal building design for a fire station and department headquarters. 

Congratulations to Bobby Buttrick, who was awarded the top prize of $5,000 and to Pranav Amin for earning first place and $4,000 in the “Graduate Division.” Both are graduate students at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and advised by Professor Stephen Schreiber, Chair of the Department of Architecture in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

MCA Reports Virtual Summer Meeting a Success

CHICAGO – July 28, 2020 – The Metal Construction Association (MCA) is proud to report that its Virtual Summer Meeting, held June 15-18, enjoyed record high attendance, and promoted a positive outlook for the future of the metal construction industry.

With 166 registrants and an average of 50 people attending the council/committee meetings, the association reports the virtual meeting format gave more members and guests the opportunity to attend and engage with the association.

Due to the COVID pandemic, they shifted gears and changed their 51st Annual Conference from a three-day live event into a 30-day online event last month. Additionally, MBCEA formally recognized their 2020 Building of the Year winners during this “virtual event,” which is typically done in person at the annual conference.

With the current surface transportation authorization’s expiration date of September 30 drawing closer, lawmakers are turning their attention to passing a new infrastructure bill. As reported by Construction Dive, “Last week, House Democrats unveiled a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill that includes almost $500 billion of green measures proposed as part of the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America (INVEST in America) Act earlier this month.”

TOP AIA COTE® AWARD HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING SUSTAINABILITY AT A YOUNG AGE

Each year, the AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE®) recognizes 10 projects that integrate design excellence and environmental performance. One winner receives the COTE Top Ten Plus award—an indication of exemplary proven energy performance and post-occupancy results. This year’s “plus” award was given to the Environmental Nature Center and Preschool in Newport Beach, California, for reasons of “Introducing kids to responsible sustainability at a young age and represents a place where people will want to send their children. It does all the right things—water, biophilia, resilience, and strong material choices.” (ARCHITECT Magazine) Through simple and cost-effective design strategies, the center was certified as the first LEED Platinum building in Orange County, California, and has operated at net zero since it opened, serving the community as an educational tool for sustainability.
