On behalf of the METALCON team, thank YOU, our metal construction community, for your support this year. Thanks to you we saw a 30% increase in our METALCON Blog readership! And despite having to postpone our in-person event, your support and participation for our new virtual programming has been nothing short of amazing! Since the launch of METALCONLive! in April, we have held 12 virtual events and have interacted with over 2,500 participants.

MCA Reports Virtual Summer Meeting a Success

CHICAGO – July 28, 2020 – The Metal Construction Association (MCA) is proud to report that its Virtual Summer Meeting, held June 15-18, enjoyed record high attendance, and promoted a positive outlook for the future of the metal construction industry.

With 166 registrants and an average of 50 people attending the council/committee meetings, the association reports the virtual meeting format gave more members and guests the opportunity to attend and engage with the association.

The Metal Building Contractors & Erectors Association has had a busy few months. Due to the COVID pandemic, they shifted gears and changed their 51st Annual Conference from a three-day live event into a 30-day online event last month. Additionally, MBCEA formally recognized their 2020 Building of the Year winners during this “virtual event,” which is typically done in person at the annual conference.

The Moving Forward Act’s Proposed $1.5 Trillion in New Investments Will Improve Range of Public Infrastructure, Creating Needed Demand for Construction While Making the Economy More Efficient (AGC)

With the current surface transportation authorization’s expiration date of September 30 drawing closer, lawmakers are turning their attention to passing a new infrastructure bill. As reported by Construction Dive, “Last week, House Democrats unveiled a $1.5 trillion infrastructure bill that includes almost $500 billion of green measures proposed as part of the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation in America (INVEST in America) Act earlier this month.”

TOP AIA COTE® AWARD HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING SUSTAINABILITY AT A YOUNG AGE

Each year, the AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE®) recognizes 10 projects that integrate design excellence and environmental performance. One winner receives the COTE Top Ten Plus award—an indication of exemplary proven energy performance and post-occupancy results. This year’s “plus” award was given to the Environmental Nature Center and Preschool in Newport Beach, California, for reasons of “Introducing kids to responsible sustainability at a young age and represents a place where people will want to send their children. It does all the right things—water, biophilia, resilience, and strong material choices.” (ARCHITECT Magazine) Through simple and cost-effective design strategies, the center was certified as the first LEED Platinum building in Orange County, California, and has operated at net zero since it opened, serving the community as an educational tool for sustainability.

The “greatest economic boom has come to a screeching halt…” commented Frank A. Stasiowski, FAIA, Founder and CEO of PSMJ Resources and Co-Founder of METALCON, in partnership with the Metal Construction Association, in his opening comments of last week’s first METALCON Live industry event. If you tuned in, however, you’ll know that it was not all doom and gloom; in fact, just the opposite. “Re-Igniting Sales and Operations Amidst a World Health Crisis” did just as it promised – it delivered a “no-BS discussion of current challenges and workarounds.”

Nearly 300 participants from all facets of the metal construction industry tuned in last Wednesday as Frank and Rob Haddock, CEO and Founder of S-5! Metal Roof Innovations, commenced METALCON’s first of several upcoming METALCON Live events. Not only did they lend their expertise and share practical steps they are taking in their own businesses, Frank and Rob also asked questions via Zoom’s polling feature that provided an opportunity to discover what is happening across the industry in real time.

Dezeen.com reports, “Scaly aluminium cladding and projecting glass boxes wrap around Frank Gehry’s Luma Arles tower, which is nearing completion in the south of France in the City of Arles. Pritzker Prize-winning Gehry is an American-Canadian architect best known for the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum Bilbao that opened in Spain in 1997.

As Women in Construction Week 2020 continues, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for architecture’s highest honor, the Pritzker Prize, to be jointly awarded to two women! As announced in ArchDaily, “With more than 40 years of professional experience, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, partners and co-founders of Dublin-based Grafton Architects, are the first women to be jointly awarded the architecture’s highest honor. The 2020 Laureates, who are both educators and architects, are known for their powerful yet delicate approaches. Their contextual and modern interventions are very attentive to history, demonstrating high levels of sensitivity and craftsmanship.”

Women in Construction Week

Heidi Ellsworth being recognized as the first-ever WORLD AWARD winner NWIR Day last month!

Continuing our focus on Women in Construction Week 2020, we will be highlighting women who are making a difference and initiatives targeted to helping women advance in the roofing and construction industry.

Last month, the third annual National Women in Roofing Day was held on Sunday, February 2, 2020 prior to the start of the International Roofing Expo in Dallas. RCS partner and one of METALCON’s speakers, Heidi J. Ellsworth, kicked off the day, speaking about visualization for success. Heidi has played a key role with METALCON over the past two years, creating and leading several educational sessions about the importance of hiring more women in the industry.

MCA Announces 2019 Chairman Award Winners

Winner of Overall Excellence and Commercial/Industrial

As reported by DesignandBuildwithMetal.com, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) has recognized North America’s most outstanding metal construction projects of 2019. Winners in six categories were announced at MCA’s Winter Meeting Awards Dinner held last month. This year’s judging panel of distinguished architects included James Theimer, Principal Architect, Trilogy Architecture; Mark Roddy, Lecturer in the Department of Design, California State University, Sacramento; and Erik Mehlman, Partner and Design Lead at BuildSense | Architecture + Construction.

The Chairman’s Awards go to the most exceptional buildings involving MCA member companies. The criteria include overall appearance, significance of metal in the project, innovative use of metal, and the role of metal in achieving project objectives. Here are the winners:

3D Printing Takes a Huge Leap Forward in Metal Construction

Redshift by Autodesk reports in their recent article, “Massive Hybrid Manufacturing Machine in Europe Pushes Boundaries of 3D Printing,” that a new machine is now designed to 3D-print metal parts and structures for construction as large as 2 meters in diameter (6.5 feet) and up to 6 meters long (over 19 feet long) and 2,000 kilograms (4,409 pounds) in weight.

Magnificent Metal Monday

Who doesn’t love a good potato chip? MMM travels to Barnstable, MA, this week to highlight the fresh look that the Cape Cod Potato Chip facility recently did to their nearly 40-year-old facility. With its growing popularity, Cape Cod Potato Chips has seen its annual number of visitors expand to more than 250,000 and wanted a look as unique as the taste of its kettle cooked chips. To do so, they turned to McElroy Metal to do an exterior renovation with ribbed metal wall panels.
