For metal building contractors and erectors, 2021 was a roller coaster ride with steel prices in total flux rising to all time highs and decreasing to all time lows. Paul Deffenbaugh, editorial director of Metal Construction News (MCN), comments, ” Price, availability and demand for construction materials all fluctuated widely in 2021, but despite that, the top metal builders report increases in the average tonnage and square footage. In fact, by all measures, 2021 was a very strong year for the metal building industry when looking at the largest contractors.”

Join us tomorrow as this panel of experts takes a “deep dive” into why Engineering Evaluations (EE) could be an acceptable alternative to running an NFPA 285 wall assembly test. This course will show how this evaluation process can be used as a viable path to evaluate wall assemblies to the requirements of the International Building Code. The baseline information required and the “layer-by-layer” analysis used will be reviewed by a qualified fire professional to demonstrate that a specific wall assembly meets the intent of the code. This approach should make the expected performance of the wall assembly clear to the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) so that an informed decision can be made on the acceptance of the proposed wall assembly.
According to an article in Metal Construction News, “Insulated metal panels (IMPs) are an ideal option to clad building envelopes due to their superior insulation value, high-performance air barrier, aesthetics, design flexibility and ease of installation. Providing an all-in-one continuous insulation system, IMPs serve as an exterior rainscreen, air and moisture barrier, and thermal insulation that reduces mold and corrosion.”

ArchDaily reports, “The exterior was inspired by the act of discovery, with symbolic metal curtains that are peeled away to reveal greater knowledge within. Over 120,000 books and media offerings are available in this building that aspires to be a vessel for daylight. The building’s massing and clerestory glazing deliberately subdivide, stretch, and carve the envelope to provide an optimal amount of daylight throughout the facility.”
Matthew Kruntorád, AIA, LEED AP, principal at MSR Design, and architect for the project, says metal made this library possible and contributed to giving it an adaptable, column-free and daylight-filled interior. “It allows the delicate proportions of the exterior columns and thin plaza canopies.”Continue reading
