Magnificent Metal Monday – eSports Arenas

Last week we featured two new stadiums built for the world of “traditional” sports. How about arenas for eSports? eSports describes the world of competitive, organized video gaming and is one of the fastest growing sectors of the sports and entertainment industry. While eSports is digitally based, the industry increasingly needs a variety of physical spaces to house its in-person events, so a boom period is starting around building competitive gaming infrastructure.

According to CNN, “the world of competitive video gaming is a fast-growing international phenomenon with millions of fans and billions of dollars up for grabs. Streaming services and live events have turned casual gamers into serious stars who can sometimes rake in seven-figure earnings and massive brand endorsements.”

Building Design + Construction reports a new 6,000-seat eSports arena is under construction in Shanghai for Edward Gaming (EDG), a professional eSports organization based in China. The arena, which will be part of a larger entertainment venue, will be located in Shanghai’s Minhang District. The Shanghai International NCC&Esports Center will provide office space and be the home arena for EDG. It will also include an eSports-themed hotel, an indoor skydiving center, a driving range, and a breakdancing venue. When completed the center is expected to be able to host up to 10,000 visitors a day. The NCC&Esports Center is slated for completion at some point in 2024.

Last year, Red Bull issued a list of the biggest and best eSports arenas that canvas the globe from London to Germany, Seoul and the United States.
