Know what’s MAGNIFICENT? The future of women in the roofing and construction industry! While women make up almost 50% of the US workforce, they represent only 9% of the construction industry proving there is a huge growth opportunity for women. From summer camps for high school girls to women in construction being featured at METALCON 2018, steps are being made to increase the numbers.
Today we shine a light on a recent Metal Construction News article about a Summer Camp designed for high school girls to learn about metal roofing installation and careers in construction. And this year at METALCON 2018, catch one of the general sessions led by a panel of leading women professionals in the construction industry.
Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls
Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls is a program designed for high school age girls to attend a free week-long camp to explore the construction trades, architecture, engineering, and construction materials manufacturing through hands-on experiences and field trips. Now in its second year, this annual camp was held the week of July 9th at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Eastern Pennsylvania’s training center in Allentown, PA. The “Let’s Build Camp was created in 2017, the result of a collaborative effort between the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter, the ABC Eastern PA Chapter, and the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentor Lehigh Valley Affiliate. Only 25 camp participants are selected and based on an application submitted with a detailed statement of why the applicant wants to be a part of the camp.
One of METALCON’s long standing partners, ATAS, was on hand this year providing hands-on training at the camp. Lee Ann M. Slattery, sales support manager for ATAS, and involved in the planning of the camp, stated, “ATAS was pleased to be involved in the camp again this year. We are a strong supporter of the development and training of students within the local community, and this is the perfect opportunity to allow the campers exploration of potential careers in the architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing industries.”
There are several other camps similar to “Let’s Build” located across the country. For example, check out the National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC) list of camps run by their state chapters, Oregon-based nonprofit Girls Build, Tools & Tiaras girls construction camp in New York, and Girls Garage in Berkeley, California.
