VMZINC® Panels Contribute To Sustainability of East Baton Rouge Main Library

RALEIGH, N.C., July 6, 2016 – Deemed the “library in the park,” the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library in Baton Rouge, Louisiana utilized VMZINC® panels to create a modern aesthetic and sustainable design. A total of 40,000 square feet of standing seam, interlock and flat lock zinc panels were an integral material of the building’s canopies and roof.

The library not only boasts adult, teen and children’s collection areas, but also a meeting room for nearly 300 people, rooftop garden, technology stations and drive-through window. The $41 million project was a joint venture between Cockfield Jackson Architects, Dewberry and Tipton Associates.

Nestled in Independence Park, the designers wanted to build a facility that engaged library visitors in the surrounding environment. Strategically placed zinc canopies and glass openings allow natural sunlight to infiltrate the building. The integration of metal, glass and locally crafted brick creates a beautiful, contemporary look and feel.

The use of zinc serves more than just a visual purpose. Firstly, it is well suited for the Louisiana climate, as it is well adapted for harsh sun and heavy rains. Also, zinc develops a natural gray patina over time and does not require continued maintenance, ensuring that patrons can continue to enjoy the library for years to come. Finally, the zinc “butterfly roof” curves up on each side, funneling rainwater into a 4,000-gallon cistern, which is used to water the library’s rooftop garden and surrounding greenery.

Completed in 2014, the 129,000-square-foot facility is the headquarters for the East Baton Rouge Parish’s library system. Through a focus on implementing sustainable building materials, including fully recyclable zinc, the library has achieved a LEED Silver Certification.

QUOTES: “VMZINC® was honored to be a part of this impressive project in Louisiana, “said Daniel Nicely, managing director at VMZINC®-US. “Zinc panels give the library the modern look patrons admire, as well as the high quality and durability that architects need.”
